HMRC SCAM ALERT
We have received several calls from worried clients in the last few weeks after they have received calls purportedly from HMRC demanding payment and claiming that there is an arrest warrant out for them in respect of unpaid tax. This is a scam and should be reported to Action Fraud if you receive such a call. There is no such thing as an arrest warrant for non-payment of tax.
How do you know that you are actually paying HMRC?
HMRC have two main accounts for payment of personal or business tax and these are:
Sort code 083210
A/C 12001020 or 12001039
The account for paying VAT is:
Sort code 083200
Always use your tax reference number as the reference for any payments
DO NOT pay to any other accounts and DO NOT pay by debit or credit card in response to a phone call – always use the links on www.hmrc.gov.uk to make card payments or call HMRC using the telephone numbers on their website.
DO NOT call HMRC on any phone number given to you by anyone claiming to be from HMRC – only use the official contact numbers on www.hmrc.gov.uk
